🍫 Chocolate Chips: Melted into a quick magic shell. Once melted, they create that crackly layer that makes every bite feel like a treat.
🥥 Coconut Oil: Just a touch transforms melted chocolate into a glossy shell that hardens instantly when it hits the cold bowl.
🍓 Frozen Strawberries: Sweet, tart, and icy, They blend into a thick, creamy base that tastes like strawberry sorbet in smoothie form.
🍏 Applesauce or Fruit Puree: Adds natural sweetness and a silky texture. You can swap in whatever fruit puree you love most.

Common Questions
Any milk will work to make this Strawberry Smoothie Bowl. I used almond milk , but coconut milk, soy milk, oat milk , or cow’s milk will all work.
You can use any brand or kind of chocolate chips. I prefer vegan and semi-sweet chocolate chips.
If your blender does not have a tamper, you can turn the blender off every 30 seconds or so and use a rubber spatula to push the strawberry puree down the sides of the blender and toward the blades.
Yes, you can use fresh strawberries, but the texture will be different. Frozen strawberries provide a thicker, ice-cream-like consistency when blended. If using fresh, you may need to add ice cubes to achieve a similar texture.
You can use vegetable oil, or any other neutral oil if you don’t have coconut oil. However, coconut oil helps the chocolate harden more quickly and gives it a smooth texture.
A thick smoothie bowl recipe usually comes down to frozen fruit and minimal liquid. Using frozen strawberries, bananas, or other fruit gives you that creamy, sorbet-like texture!

Equipment
- ▢ Measuring Cups + Spoons
- ▢ Medium Pot
- ▢ Mixing Bowls
- ▢ Blender
Ingredients
- ▢ ⅓ cup chocolate chips
- ▢ ½ teaspoon coconut oil
- ▢ 2 cups frozen strawberries
- ▢ ½ cup apple sauce , or any fruit puree you love
- ▢ 1 tablespoons nut milk , more if needed
- ▢ chopped nuts , for topping
Instructions
- ▢ To melt the chocolate, create a double boiler on the stovetop by filling a medium pot with 2 cups water. Bring to a simmer over medium-low heat. Place a heatproof bowl on top of the pot (be sure the bottom of the bowl is not touching the simmering water.) Add the chocolate chips and coconut oil to the bowl. Stir constantly until the chocolate is completely melted. Turn off the heat.
- ▢ You can also melt the chocolate in the microwave. Simply combine the chocolate chips and coconut oil in a microwave-safe bowl and microwave, stirring every 30 seconds or so, until the chocolate is fully melted, about 2 minutes.
- ▢ Add the strawberries, apple sauce, and nut milk to a blender and blend until fully combined and smooth, using a blender tamper as needed, about 1 minute.
- ▢ Add the frozen strawberry mixture to a bowl and pour over as much melted chocolate as you like. Swirl the chocolate around to fully distribute it. Place the bowl in the freezer to allow the chocolate to harden, 5 to 10 minutes.
- ▢ Garnish with chopped nuts, if using, and enjoy.
Nonna’s Notes
- 🍌 Boost creaminess: Add half a frozen banana to make the base even thicker and creamier.
- 🍫 Switch it up: Use white chocolate or dark chocolate chips for a different flavor on the magic shell.
- 🥭 Fruit swap: No applesauce? Try mango, peach, or pear puree for a fun twist.
- 🥥 Extra toppings: Granola, coconut flakes, fresh berries, or cacao nibs all work beautifully here.
- ⚡ Blender tip: If your blender is struggling, pause and scrape down the sides, or add just a splash more nut milk, but don’t overdo it if you want a thick smoothie bowl.
