Italian Chopped Sandwich

This Italian Chopped Sandwich gets a score of 500/10…it’s that good! Have you seen the Italian chopped 🥪 sandwich going viral on TikTok? If you haven’t, be sure to make my version of it because it’s WORTH the hype. Although this sandwich is nowhere near traditional Italian, I do use great- quality Italian ingredients, such as provolone, mortadella, Prosciutto Cotto, and pepperoncini. They’re all accompanied by a creamy mayonnaise, Italian seasoning, and 🌶️ pepperoncini juice dressing. This sandwich only takes 10 minutes from start to finish and I guarantee it will hit the spot.

Why You’ll Love Italian Chopped Sandwich
What makes this Italian Chopped Sandwich special is that because every ingredient is 🔪 chopped as finely as possible, you get a perfect bite, with every texture and flavor, every time. This sandwich is absolutely perfect for 🧺 picnics, school lunches, camping or a beach day. You can prep all of the ingredients the night before (leaving the lettuce and the bread on the side so that it doesn’t get soggy) and assemble the following day.
How to Prepare Italian Chopped Sandwich
🥬 Add the lettuce to a clean cutting board along with slices of prosciutto cotto, mortadella, provolone cheese, and pepperoncini (if using).
🔪 With a big sharp knife , chop everything as small as possible.
🥣 Once finely chopped, add the mayo, Italian seasoning, and the pickled juice from the pepperoncini jar directly on top. Alternatively, you can transfer this chopped mixture into a bowl and add the dressing or simply add it on top.
🥖 Mix well, add to your favorite bun and enjoy!
Nonna’s Tip 😋
I recommend going to a local Italian deli and getting good quality meats for this recipe.

Variations and Substitutions for Italian Chopped Sandwich
- If you want a lighter version of my Italian Chopped Sandwiches, check out my 🥗 Italian Chopped Salad recipe here.
- If you want a lighter dressing, feel free to use yogurt instead or do 1/2 mayonnaise and 1/2 yogurt to balance it out.
- Use any cold cut combination you like or whatever you have on hand.
- Instead of pepperoncini, you could also add a muffuletta blend, 🫒 olives, or any 🌶️ spicy variety you love.
- I used iceberg lettuce in these Italian Chopped Sandwiches, but you could also use 🥬 romaine, red leaf, or even cabbage or chopped, crisp fennel.
- Experiment with different types of 🧀 cheese such as cheddar, Swiss, mozzarella, or provolone. You can also mix different cheeses if you’d like.

Common Questions
Prosciutto Cotto is a cooked Italian ham that is salted and dry-cured. It is much more exquisite and healthier than your regular deli ham but you can absolutely use any you have on hand.
Mortadella is a large Italian sausage or luncheon meat made of ground meat-cured pork, which incorporates at least 15% small cubes of pork fat. It is traditionally flavored with black pepper grains, but modern versions can also contain pistachios or, more rarely, myrtle berries.
I suggest first chopping all of the ingredients for my Italian Chopped Sandwiches and then adding them to a large Tupperware. Leave the chopped lettuce separate so that it doesn’t get soggy. Mix the chopped ingredients together, then add the dressing once you get to your destination, then add to the buns.
You can certainly omit the meat, and use your favorite plant-based varieties or tofu. You could also simply add more veggies, such as peppers, mushrooms, celery, onion, carrot or fennel.
